Hi all,
We’re happy to announce the availability of an online SFP/+/DAC transceiver compatibility list!
We are often asked what SFPs our devices support and there are simply too many brands, models, and varieties to reasonably purchase, test, and log each and every one. No exaggeration, it’s likely to be in the millions of dollars (if not tens of millions of dollars) to do that and a massive effort for manpower.
So why not crowdsource the data?
The list of reported modules can be found at https://sfp.alta.inc/sfp/results or just https://sfp.alta.inc
If you want to report a module, there’s a link to do so on that page or go to https://sfp.alta.inc/sfp/report (there is also a link on this page to go to the results page)
Results Page
On the results page, you can search and sort by nearly any data point. There are also quick filters at the top of the page that will filter by the capabilities. Want a 5Gbps DAC? Easy! Click DAC and 5Gbps.
The default order for the table is the score. The scale is 0 to 100, 50 being neutral. The higher the score, the higher a transceiver will be in the table (by default). If a user submits that the transceiver works, the score is automatically incremented by 1. If the users reports that it doesn’t work or works with a configuration change, then the score is decremented by 1.
On the results page, you can also vote for an already existing transceiver rather than having to submit a new, duplicate of one already in the system. As you can probably surmise, clicking the - button will decrement the score and clicking the + button will increment the score.
Be aware that there are rate limits that we won’t be disclosing here. This is to prevent any sort of bad actors from tainting the integrity of the platform.
Submission Page
The goal here was to make submitting a new SFP as quick as possible.
We are aware the list of manufacturers is sparse to start with. However, there is “OTHER” as an option for Manufacturer. If you select that, you’ll be provided a text box to enter the manufacturer’s name.
Manufacturer, Model, Status, and Tested Alta Devices are the only required fields for a good, working SFP.
If it doesn’t work, the only additional field that is required is knowing if it’s Alta devices on both ends of the link or if it’s mixed manufacturers.
Of course, any additional information you can provide is GREATLY appreciated
Once a new submission is entered, it goes to a pending queue where Alta Labs staff will review the submission for accuracy, fill in any gaps with its capabilities (this is where providing a link to the SFP/DAC really comes in handy) and approve or reject the submission. Once approved:
- If applicable, the Manufacturer name will be added to the list of selectable Manufacturer’s list
- The SFP/DAC will be shown in the results table
We do encourage users to provide name and email in the event we need to reach out for any clarification. We will not SPAM you. We are encrypting your contact information.
