Regarding the mDNS feature, would it be possible to limit it to specific VLANs ??? Currently, I configured my pfSense to forward the mDNS request from IoT network to my Home network, and only that. So I limited every other mDNS request in my entire network.
- The Unifi Dream Machine currently has poor data reporting because it doesn’t seem to count IPv6 traffic in the data usage, is this the same for the Route10?
- The UDM QOS system seems to ignore IPv6 traffic, would this be the case for Route10?
- One of my favourite features in the Unifi world is the one click option to isolate a VLAN from all other VLANs which can be very helpful for iOS etc. Is this possible in the Route10 world?
Just having a S8-POE switch for the time being with 3 LAN devices wired.
One of them is an AP6-Pro (PoE).
Can I completely replace my S8-POE with a Route10 as soon as it will be available in my country?
Route10 would have enough ports for me (including PoE for my AP6-Pro) but does it make sense to use Route10 as a little switch?
Can I skip the physical switch, plug all into Route10 and have all my 3 VLANs there?
Or do you guys recommend to stay with the classic setup router - switch - AP anyway?
Just curious…
I’m currently running my Route10 with an AP6-Pro and a Control over the POE, then another LAN out to an S8-POE where I have my workstation and another AP hooked up. I don’t see any issue with VLANs either, but perhaps there is something I overlooked in your question. It should work fine.
I just ordered one however after looking through this thread there are some concerns and questions that jump out.
Like that others above have said, reverse proxy with authentication would be an amazing feature, one that on its own would get people to pick one of these up to securely access services they are running on the local network from the outside.
Seeing that DHCP and IP reservations will not be an option at launch is just jarring. You get the alt router, alta switch, alta AP, oh but we need a separate device from 3rd party to have DHCP?
You already send notifications when an alta device seems to be offline can you please expand this into a section with a graph and logs of every time the route10 loses internet connection and what the duration was. This helps with getting credits back on the internet bill for outages.
Sorry about this confusion. The Route10 has a fully functional DHCP server out of the box. Static reservations can also be assigned on a per-client basis. (Edit: Maybe after firmware upgrade to 1.3j
)
Q: Will it launch with dual-WAN support?
A: That is the goal, it does not support dual WAN at the time of this post, but we have a heavy goal to have that ready to go by the time end-users physically have the router
Q: Is Dual WAN working as of today?
Q: What is the plan for secrets management? For example when you introduce Wireguard, how will keys be securely stored. My understanding is everything is pushed from the Alta Controller / Cloud, having looked on the controller database most things seem to be stored in plain text.
Dual WAN is working in the public firmware release!
I suspect they will be stored strictly on the device and not in the cloud. @Alta-Jeff can confirm.
How do you change the LAN subnet on the Route10? Kinda frustrating this isn’t obvious in settings unless I am blind.
If VLAN 1 is your primary subnet, or if you only have VLAN 1, change is using the properties panel for Route10. Click on the icon for route 10, the click on the pencil next to VLAN 1.
Oh geez! Thank you so much!!
In the cloud controller, the secrets are stored in an encrypted database. For the local controller, the database is currently stored plaintext, but only accessible to the controller user. The only way to obtain controller user access is via ssh key.
I played with the new Route10 and it is a nice device full of features for such a small form factor at this price range, I think that it is hard to beat, but I faced 2 problems.
I had a problem with the route10. I tried connecting a DAC SFP+ 10gig cable, but the Route10 and the 24-port switch didn’t detect it. It used to work well between my pfSense and the switch 10gb but didn’t work with the route10. When I wanted to force the speed connection to 10gb, It didn’t show 10gb only 1gb and lower…
Did someone face that problem ??
I also tested the PPPOE configuration since I’m with Bell. My concern with this device was the PPPOE speed since I moved out from Unifi because I had a slower WAN speed (400mb/s) when I had a fiber 1 GB plan. I asked about the PPPOE speed in the Route10 live Q&A, and the speed wasn’t supposed to be an issue, but I was unable to reach a higher than 500-550 mb/s.
Anyone on this one too ??
Post a picture of the lable on the DAC cable and Jeff can work on figuring out what’s going on with it. Unfortunately I don’t live somewhere that has an ISP that uses PPPoE, so I have not been able to do any testing on that.
About the SFP+ cable is this one from Amazon.
The problem is that it works well within my pfSense and the 24-port switch but not between the switch and the route10.
For the PPPOE, like I said I had the same problem with Ubiquiti and it is a well-known issue. I hope they find a solution to achieve higher speed with PPPOE because it may be a game-changer for many of us.
Strange I am using that exact DAC cable in the exact same scenario… what firmware version are running on the switch and Route10?
Route10 is at version, 1.3k
Are you running the DAC cable between the first SFP+ port (the 5th port over from the left) on Route10, to the switch?
