My Sonos devices and AirPrint stopped working (but is working again now)

Enabling IGMPSnooping did not help. I am going to write up a detailed email for Matt so he can hopefully duplicate my exact setup.

In general I would recommend disabling IGMP snooping across the board, especially since there are many different interpretations of what snooping should do, and disabling it gets you back to a clean slate where there is no special multicast bridging logic involved.

@JRosen The UniFi controller was automatically enabling Storm Control?

@MichaelMuni Can you describe your exact problem in more detail, and whether you are discovering between multiple VLANs?

@rutman286 Have you been able to supply support with a wireless packet capture along with the PSK used so that we can decrypt the capture and confirm whether or not MDNS frames are getting sent to your client(s)?

After many hours of testing, we haven’t been able to reproduce anything similar here, but we’d love to fix the issue if we can find that there’s something truly wrong.

I setup an SSID with two passwords, each on separate VLANS, devices get correctly assigned to the correct vlans and receive the correct IP’s for those vlans. Airprint works for maybe 5 minutes after making an SSID live using Standard Network option. It seems to last a bit longer for LARGE network but is still hit/miss working half the time. My iPhone and MacBook can no longer communicate with my Elgato Evo Key lights in the room with my computer. Family members with Roku devices can no longer communicate with he Roku devices over wifi via the phone app. Also the 2nd AP6 pro I have is in mesh mode and keeps disconnecting and knocking devices that were using it offline.

My old Orbi wifi6 AP’s are dumb as rocks feature wise, but extremely stable and doesn’t have these communication issues between devices on the same network.

This is a very similar setup. @Alta-Jeff I believe the problem comes with you have multiple VLANs. If I totally flatten my network, everything works just fine. As soon as I add back TWO OR MORE vlans, it all comes crashing down.

Yes, the controller enabled storm control on multiple ports. This happened even when I set the settings to manual. After the last firmware update it hasn’t happened again.

On another recent update, they enabled port based traffic restrictions. After the update, a lot of ports including the one my AP was on ended up being set to block all traffic except for the tagged VLAN which also caused problems.

I agree that something is causing an issue with multicast traffic on the AP. Even though the settings mentioned have kept me stable for quite a while I have a funky issue happening with AirPrint where I will go to select the printer and it won’t show up. I then go back one screen and click select printer again so it searches for the printer and it instantly finds it. This happens on multiple devices but the printer prints fine once it finds it so I haven’t invested more time to figuring it out.

@MichaelMuni Is it possible to invite me to your network so that I can run some tests there while the problem happens? Can you ping (and/or ARP) between devices on the same VLAN when the problem is happening?

Sorry, just chiming in on this one from my point of view- I was able to ping and access the web interface of my HP printer even though AirPrint wasn’t working

Yes I could ping devices on same vlan.

Sorry can’t invite you to site for privacy reasons and also you won’t be able to see it in action as all devices have been moved off of Alta.

The ability to ping and communicate with the device while not being able to discover them indicates a specific problem with multicast alone. We still haven’t been able to reproduce this internally, but if anyone would like to help by inviting me to their site, please let me know.

It is concerning that it is so repeatable for me, with different firewall and switch setups even. @Alta-Jeff I am plug the Alta APs back in when I am home for lunch at 11am PST today and invite you to take a look. can you DM me the email address to use for the invite?

@rutman286 It’s also concerning that we can’t reproduce the same issue here  but I’m sure we will get to the bottom of it soon. Will DM you the email to use.

any updates?

@Alta-Jeff and @Alta-MattH are on my system trying some things. It is currently broken for them to see.

I heard @Alta-Jeff found an issue while looking at your network @rutman286. Jeff, do you have any timeframe for a fix ?

He has been working on it all day far as I know Michael. I’m sure he will get it to us as soon as possible!
I am very greatful for now helpful and on point this team at Alta is. I am trying my hardest not to rush them and ask for too much.

I’m pleased that the Alta guys have been able to look at a real life situation that is affecting a number of people. Hopefully they’ve gleaned enough info to be able to rectify the problem

ASAP  Still working on it.

Yep, not asking them to rush, just wondering.

New beta firmware seems to have fixed these issues! You guys are awesome!

Glad to hear that progress is being made.

Hopefully this will be release soon as my household is once again unable AirPrint.

I had to workaround to create a new SSID that I have to connect to each time I want to print.
