I need a mesh solution at my office/home

I have Deco mesh wifi that I want to replace with something more fun. One unit is connected to my ISP coaxial model/router 1GBs speed in my office(currently the modem and router is set to brighde mode) and the other unit is connected in the living room using only power cable and those units do the mesh thing/roaming.

I would like to achieve the same setup with Alta labs, Is it doable by purchasing the router, controller and only two access points? Is it mandatory to buy a swtich such that the root AP has to be connected to a switch and the second one can be connected to a power cable?

In my office I will use ethernet cable directly to the router. Addionally I have a homelab server running some vms with windows server datacenter (my nic have two ports, one for vms and one for the host) so vlans sounds of course fun to play with and, of course I will connect the server using ethernet cable.
Any one can help me suggest the hardware needed to achieve my situation mentioned above?

I think you would benefit most from one Route10, one S8-POE and two AP6 or AP6-Pro APs. But you do not HAVE to use the switch. There are PoE ports on Route10 that can run one of your APs just fine. Mesh is never preferred, but if you do have to use it, it works extremely well with the Apt6-Pro APs in my experience.

Ok, when you say mesh is not the preferred way, what is the preferred way? :slight_smile:

Cable cable cable when ever you can.
Nothing more stable than that.

Unfortunately it’s not an option for now

Use it in mesh mode I think it will be good!

@sinan

You might be able to support a connection to your living room should you have any available coaxial outlets.

Research MoCA and the available ethernet adapters on the market. I currently own a set of Hitron’s which work flawlessly.

FWIW Ive had good results with the gocoax brand. I was actually just testing the link.

I actaully just purchased, Route10, AP6 pro and the controller, I just loved the Idea with a controller. I guess I should be able to connect the controller to the router and use it that way. Is it required that the controller has to be connected to a switch?

The Route10 is also a mini switch(you can assign ports as LAN) so you can just plug the Control into that.

For initial set up,

Alta Controller <> Alta Route 10 (Either of the two supported PoE ports)

With your existing configuration, I would advise you keep the Alta Control directly connected to your Route10, at least until your network is up and operational before moving your Alta Control anywhere downstream of your Route10.

Oh, thats actually really cool, i forgot the part about PoE, and if I understod you correctly, I should be able to power the controller with ethernet cable from Route10 to the controller?

Cool, thank you for the help, it clearer now :slightly_smiling_face:
The help here is just on different level!

Yep, you are good to go. Can plug your controller into one POE port and the AP6 into another. Mesh the other one.

I just got my my router and AP6 pro, controller on they way and I think I need a switch now, I just put my router into brigde mode and its time to configure things here.
The installation was easy and the hardware looks really good! :slight_smile:
Thank you all for helping my figuring out whats needed!!!

Nice! Let us know how the meshing works. I played around with it for and it worked pretty well.

@ebrunn
I actually started with only one AP6 Pro just to see if only one AP is enough, Im in the middle on configuring the the wifi, and I cannot understand why AP6 pro sometimes it says discconnected

whats more intereseting is running scan allways result in time out. Any idea whats happening in here?

I will have a look here in the morning, just realized its 00:28 in Sweden and I will be dead at work If I dont get some shut eye xD

maybe just try power cycling the route10 and ap6 together by unplugging the route10 (assuming the ap is connected to the poe port on the route10)?

Yes, the AP is connected to Route10 on PoE port

other things to check could be the other poe port, if its still dropping maybe try changing the ethernet cable.
