AP7-Pro Firmware 3.0j Released

  • Add support for MLO (Multi-Link Operation)

This update is being rolled out now. You can manually initiate the upgrade if you’d like, or it will automatically update overnight (if auto-updates are enabled). The complete, up-to-date change log is available here:

Thanks for this update! I see in Control that there’s a note saying MLO isn’t recommended in its current state, but I’d like to understand more about how it was implemented.

If my understanding is right, MLO needs WPA3, and WPA3-Personal only allows one password. So what happens on an SSID with several AltaPasses on it? I’m assuming it works like the Force 6 GHz behaviour, where only the first password in the list gets it?

A few other questions:

  • Does enabling MLO change WPA3 or PMF for the whole SSID, or only for the clients actually using MLO? I’m curious what the interaction might be with older WPA2 only devices.
  • Which links can be combined ? Would it be 5+6 only, or would 2.4 be included as well?
  • Is a separate WPA3-only SSID the intended way to run MLO, or is it meant to sit alongside multi-PSK on one SSID?

Thanks!

MLO does not require WPA3 if you enable it on a 2+5 GHz SSID. It’s only required when 6 GHz gets involved because 6 GHz requires WPA3, so in that respect, you are correct. If you use multiple passwords, and have 6 GHz enabled, you would not always be able to form a successful MLO connection when using a password other than the first.

Any/all links from all bands can be combined. Mobile devices will use whatever bands they think is best.

If 6 GHz is enabled, a separate WPA3 SSID is often the most compatible way to run MLO, since many client devices still have issues with WPA3 transition mode.
