- Any opinions on the new 48 ports switch ?
- Are you hype?
- Would you join the live event?
I would really like to join that live event and hear about a HUGE update for Route10.
16-port 2.5G, 32-port 1G, All POE
That would be nice too! Personally, I have a custom pfSense that does a lot of things, and I use the Route10 as a secondary router for testing. I switched from UDM-Pro to pfSense, and I have never been happier. So I prefer having more devices of the same ecosystem with a different router than having everything in the same ecosystem, because it locks me to this ecosystem.
Since the router is the core of the network, I can easily switch between brands for APs or switches, as I only configure them a couple of times a year. I also stick with Alta’s APs and switches since they perform better than Unifi in terms of performance (speed and reliability). So having a 48-port switch with the capacity to power all my POE devices and be able to wire more devices in my house is more of a game changer for me than having new features on the router.
But of course, I’m aware that people prefer having all devices in the same ecosystem, and it is fine. I hope there is some news on the live stream about the route10
I’m curious of the chipset, operating power and per-port specifications.
I guess we’ll find out in time. At first glance, it seems excessive for typical residential and most SMB installations. Looks to be geared towards enterprise which may leave a chunk of the Alta base resorting to other vendors for high port density solutions without PoE for potential cost savings. Hopefully Alta considers and keeps that chunk in mind.
I double checked what they said a couple of live streams ago and it sounds like it should be:
Total Ports: 52
1Gb: 32
2.5Gb: 16
10Gb SFP+: 4
Power Budget: 740W
PoE on all copper ports
Interesting to see 4x10G SFP+
I’d hope at least two of the four SFP+ are scalable to 25g ea.
We’ll see!
That would be nice, but I think a switch with SFP28 ports would be more enterprise-grade, since I don’t think many people are using 25Gb/s. Perhaps a more enterprise-oriented switch will be introduced later, featuring all RJ45 10Gb ports and some 25Gb SFP28 ports.
Not commenting against Alta directly for this, but the term “Enterprise” is worthless now in the consumer hardware market. Everyone claims their equipment is “Enterprise” grade.
Same with military grade.
