It’s 100% fine to mention them or their products (particularly if you’re switching to Alta from them ). It is a little awkward to say “Yeah, I have a bunch of Ubiquiti gear here” without context, just looks and feels weird.
For me (and I’m only speaking solely for myself here), I just don’t want the appearance of being derogatory about them…and it’s kind of joking around as well to be completely honest. I still know people that work there, good people. We can both exist and it be friendly/cordial competition.
My attitude is competition benefits everyone. It makes both companies produce better products and/or services which, in turn, benefits the end user regardless of the manufacturer.
There’s also a few other little nuances to it, but yeah, that’s like 99% of it.
Fair enough! Totally understand and appreciate the candor, Matt. Especially with wanting to provide context on mysteriously having a bunch of their gear around to test with
I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t committing some kind of major faux pas for mentioning them
Gotcha, no problem. I appreciate the follow up. I prefer DAC’s for short runs, especially anything for home use given their efficiency from both a power and heat perspective.
I’d perhaps recommend posting which switch you’re using along with which cables/modules are being used, then tagging @Alta-Matt_v2 since he plans to work on replicating @Beaker 's environment for further testing
@Alta-Matt_v2
How can you do that if the switch is offline?
The sfp+ ports are our uplink to the rest of the network
so if they are down, the game has ended.
Apologies, I assumed you had physical access to the switch. If a software reboot presented the same symptoms, a physical power cycle could be done. Disregard my previous question.
@Alta-MikeD thinks he has that SFP on hand, once confirmed, he’ll test to see if the symptoms can be reproduced.
