Quick background: we are using an Island Pro router at our office. It is connected to an Alta Labs S48 switch via a FS.com DAC (port 10 on Island, port 52 on S48).
We’ve been having a long-standing issue whenever the router installs a new update. When it comes back online after the update, the connection is never re-established with the switch, i.e. the activity lights on Island are not lit. Thinking it’s an issue with the update, I reboot the router, but that never fixes it.
The only way to fix it, is to reboot the S48 switch. I’m convinced this issue is with the S48 switch and not Island.
I’ve been working with Alta support to figure out a similar issue with the S48 switch and Josh.ai Core processor. Those two products will lose connection and the only way to get it going again is to either power cycle the PoE on the port, or disable and re-enable the port.
I figured I would post here to see if anyone else is seeing something similar with their set up and if there are any solutions. I’m hoping to get to the bottom of this soon. We’re holding off on installing more Alta products at customers until we can ensure there won’t be any issues like we’re seeing in our office – both with Island and Josh.ai. I really like both Island and Alta so I’m hoping it will get resolved soon.
(Extra tidbit: because I couldn’t remotely reboot the switch when it loses connection to the router, I installed our internet-connected power strip from Big Dog on another port on the router so I can connect and toggle the power to the S48 switch.)
Support is continuing to work with you on this issue. They were under the impression that the issue was resolved a while ago, but we’re happy to take another look.
I have actually tried pulling the DAC out and reseating it on both ends as well – it won’t re-establish the connection when plugged back in. I’ve tried DACs from 10Gtek and Cisco and Intel-coded ones from FS.com.
Basically, if I pull it out and put it back in the lights don’t come back up on the Island router. Weirdly, the switch will show a connection light – even when the router-side is unplugged.
The only thing that gets it going again is power cycling the S48 switch.
I believe I tried a transceiver pair with short patch-style fiber cable before, but I’m happy to try it again.
I had this exact same issue too, turns out my Bidi Transceivers were not liked on the Alta Switches. I changed them to a different brand and POOF all ok. Have you tried using a 10gtek Dac, or a EWWWWW Unifi one ?
We generally use DACs exclusively if the distance can be covered in 1 to 3 feet. I did have some 10Gtek BiDi transceivers that had problems – but not initially. It started after a month or so, but it was plugged into a S12 switch (which runs very hot).
My s12 switch doesn’t run hot at all and i have like 6 ports being used and all are at 10g except one. I use Bidi transceivers & 2 MM FS.com units. I am more of a 10gtek though had way better luck and success with those instead of FS.com..
