Alta route 10 is an excellent router when configured correctly.
the only problem is when you have multiple firewall rules and port forwarding entry it gets very hot. And when you try to connect with VPN ( IKEv2 or l2tp) it will over heat and the router crashes.
the router has to reboot. Using the switch with high traffic will increase the temperature.
I think a bigger case ( maybe a full 1 U rack) with a cooling fan would make a perfect router.
It would be nice to have the network ports and the power supply jack in the back and the lights in the front.
Do you have anything stacked on this router? I have many custom configurations and haven’t had any issues with crashing.
What is the reported temperature in different configurations, and what is the ambient temp?
@sandu Thanks for sharing. In addition to the questions by @dalewhlrr and @ebuckland81 I am curious what the ambient air temp is for where you have the Route10 installed. In our testing and production environments, the only way we can replicate that behavior is if the ambient temp exceeds what Route10 is rated for.
My Route10 is loaded in each port. Runs about 135-138 F(56-59C) all the time.
If I point a small bedroom fan towards it, it drops to about 125(51C).
My route10 is in a rack with other networking equipment. 4" space on both top and bottom. Nothing else on the same shelf.
Room temp 69-74F 24/7.
I have much bigger switches that have 4-10 SFP+ ports and they are cooler by about 5-10 degrees.
But the brocades do have 2 fans that are controlled by temp. So that is not a equal comparison but gives you an idea of the equipment and temps.
I would think running this hot with shorten the life span of the route10. 140F is cooking.
Alta team, what do you think?
138 F is definitely higher than average, but it’s nowhere near the point I’d start worrying about it. I’d worry around 180 F, since this is the internal temperature, which is always going to be much hotter than the ambient temperature or even the temperature of the case itself.
always maximum 73
the router works fine without any vpns and 1 lan port connected to another switch
