Hello,
I am considering a Route10 for my home network and am requesting any thoughts, input, advice if the router will be a good fit?
My network is simple, house is wired with Cat6, Comcast drop is in the basement with a patch panel. Comcast cable goes into Arris S34 modem and cat6 cable out from the modem 2.5GB port to the patch panel. The port used on the patch panel goes to the first floor living room where my Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 wifi 6E router is plugged in.
My family has 2 phones (wifi6E), 2 tablets (wifi 5G) and 2 Roku TVs (wifi 5G) & one gaming PC (wifi 6E) all connected to the wifi router.
My objectives are:
Put the gaming PC onto one of the hardwire lan connections and off wifi. I’m looking for additional speed and reduced latency in gaming via Lan hardwire rather than wifi 6E.
Get ready for higher speeds from Comcast, hence 2.5GB ports for hardwired connection from the router to the PC.
The issue I have right now is that my PC cannot get DHCP when on wired lan because my DHCP is served via the wifi router and that router does not have a cat6 run to my PC, which is on another floor.
What I would like to do is add the Route10 as the DHCP for my PC and also for QoS for gaming (when QoS is available from Alta Labs).
So, the layout would be modem > 1 connection in to Route10 (DHCP) > Route10 two connections out to patch panel > one connection goes to Rog Wifi router and the other connection goes to the PC.
Does this seem like a good solution to improve gaming speed and latency while future proofing cable speeds when comcast ups the speed from 1.5GB to the multi gig plan?
So, I’m looking for Route10 for multi gig ports, DHCP provisioning and QoS for gaming on my PC.
Any input, criticism would be appreciated.
Would I need to disable DHCP from the wifi router?
I think you are on the right track and would be happy with the speed and stability increase. I strong suggest you consider also changing your WiFi over to the AP6-Pro though. It is an amazing access point.
Thanks for the reply rutman. Yes, I will check out the AP6-Pro, I wasn’t considering new APs since the ROG wifi router has pretty good speed, but the 6E connections are not the strongest.
The system works best when it is all the same, plus the AP6-Pro has 4096 QAM which makes it really responsive even under high load. I have been extremely happy with them.
Your idea works fine, Alta 10 Routing/Gateway/firewall, Asus Setup as a ACCESS POINT.
The Alta Route 10 works perfectly with my Unifi Network Stack or any other Kit, you will be fine using your current Asus Kit , wait for Wifi 7 from Alta for a future upgrade.
QoS is the main thing missing from your requirements - but its hopefully on the backlog, you will be impressed with the performace of the Route 10.
Good advice on setting up the asus as access point only. If i remember correctly i can do that easy enough.
I am looking forward to the Route 10 and being a customer of Alta Labs. I have been looking at building my own router, but this company sounds exciting and the updates are frequent, so hopefully QoS will be available mid next year.
Well I’m only a few days ahead of you…
I have a RT68U in AP Mode, been using a VM of PF Sense in Proxmox for my DHCP and firewall, and have about 60 devices/containers/vms.
I got my Route10 around 6PM and by 930 I was fully back to static IP’s and even getting VLans planned and ready. My wallet is MAD next week I’m getting a 24port switch and their AP to replace the Asus and a switch.
Would I like more stuff to tweak sure. I have also gone with Synology instead of TrueNAS and UnRaid for storage last time. Simple is kinda peaceful the Route10 is great.
I’m also excited to get friends on these so I no longer need to drive over to help them unless I need to drive over because a reboot doesn’t work. The hours I will save I’m going to say thanks. I get it 24 hours isn’t a lot and doesn’t tell me long term but setup is a good chunk and so far so good. The other reason I have a lot of faith is their cloud management being so responsive. We will see when like 50 million people have a few devices but the local controller is in the wishlist also granted have a Container in Proxmox of one already that I play with next week.
Wow. That is a good amount to manage. Yes, i am keeping it simple because i only have 8 devices, not 60, so good to know you got up and running so quickly with the route10.
I’m debating taking a drive to Microcenter to get it, along with Arris S34 modem.
That or take down the X-mas lights, it is a balmy 3 degrees out.
