I just bought a new Route0 that happened to be sitting on the very old firmware version
i cannot update it at all
has anyone experienced similar issues?

I would try a power on reset - https://help.alta.inc/hc/en-us/articles/41370872297371-Firmware-Bootstrapping-A-K-A-Power-on-Reset. It’ll pull a “default” firmware from Alta during the process that is hopefully newer and then you can upgrade in the UI.
thanks, yes multiple resets and fw update via the mobile app did the trick and I am on the latest firmware now
