Route 10 initial setup question concerning console > settings > WIFI

Hello,

I am setting up the Route 10, have updated it to 1.4 and had a question about whether I need to setup wifi on the router?

I’m in the management console, setting up the route 10, all is good and the console sees my wifi router, all is working. I’m using route 10 for DHCP, so my network goes from cable modem, to route 10 port 1 and then I have my PC and Asus ROG wifi plugged into port 2 and 3.

The console network maps sees the ROG wifi and the ROG is provisioning DHCP for its clients just fine.

My question is, in the console > settings, there is an option to add WIFI. What is that?

Second question, I can’t reach the Wifi router, I’m trying via the browser and the IP address shown in the network map.

Okay, so after some answers via AI, it appears the wifi is “to configure and manage wireless network access for connected devices, ensuring secure, high-performance connectivity for both residential and business environments.”

Am I to turn my wifi router into an access point only, then add that access point into Route 10 and now Route 10 will assign DHCP to my phones, Roku TV, tablets? Is this the correct topology?

I think I answered my own question about why I couldn’t reach my wifi router and that is because I believe I need a switch…Modem > Route 10> Switch > PC/Wifi router.

Thanks for any help here. Yes, I’m a noob.

In this case those WiFi settings in the Alta Controller are strictly for any Alta Labs access points you might want to deploy. The Rotue10 is strictly a wired router and since the wireless is coming from a third party device (the Asus), the wireless settings won’t have any effect.

What you might be bumping into with the ASUS ROG router, especially if you have it connected to the Route10 on the WAN/Internet of the ROG router, is that it’s blocking connections into the ROG router on that port.

Most of those types of routers have the option to run in Access Point mode, which would turn off all the router specific functions and allow the Route10 to fully handle those duties.

Hope that helps!

Thank you for the response. Yes, I can turn it into an access point and clarification of the wifi settings in the router. It was confusing. I’m wondering if I can reach the router if I switch the ethernet cable from WAN to one of the LAN ports. I’ll try that, otherwise, I’ll enable wifi on my PC and connect that way to turn it into an access point.

If you wish to continue to use your Asus device as the access point, then on the Asus you should disable DHCP server, and plug one of the LAN ports on the Asus into one of the LAN ports of the Route10.

The Route10 does not have an internal access point, so the Settings → WiFi section you see in the Alta Labs controller does not apply. Those settings are valid when you deploy an Alta Labs AP like the AP6/6Pro, outdoor, wall mount.

Thanks everyone for the help! I’ve got it all setup. Wifi Router reset and redone as an AP. All 10 devices are registered in the route 10 console and mapped well. All the devices in the AP and the Route 10 console match. I reset the route 10 and the wifi router from scratch. I love this router, so cool!
