Route 10 and Gpon Module SFP+

Hi all,

Does Route 10 support SFP+ GPON module and can it sync at 2.5G ? I know most work only on 1G or 10G.

We do not officially support GPON modules at all, although some may work fine, assuming the module presents standard Ethernet to the host (ONT-on-a-stick type modules).

That said, we do not support 2.5Gbps optics (approximately 3.13Gbps SerDes rate). We only support 1Gbps and 10Gbps optical modules (1.25Gbps and 10.3Gbps SerDes rates). The only way to leverage 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps data rates via the SFP+ port would be to use an NBASE-T RJ45 SFP+ module.

EDIT: slight adjustment in wording

While not supported, I can confirm that I have an H-COM branded XGS-PON ONT running the 8311 firmware on the AT&T network with no issues at all. SFP is linked at 10Gbps with the route10 with 1GB service providing consistent throughput and improved latency over the carrier’s hardware. Interestingly, for the first few minutes afrer installing link speed was showing 2.5Gbps (although I can’t confirm it was the real speed or just bogus data from the UI)

I’m in a similar boat and also use an unsupported module. I’m using the E.C.I Networks version of the WAS-110, also running community 8311 firmware.

PON modules in general can work, as you’ve seen, as long as they present standard Ethernet to the host. In practice that means they need to be ONT-on-a-stick style modules. Straight PON, with TDMA, ranging, GTC framing, and so on, is completely unsupported, as that would require actual ONT or OLT functionality on the host side.

That said, 2.5Gbps GPON modules, even when they are ONT-on-a-stick types, typically rely on a 3.13Gbps SerDes rate, which is unsupported and non-standard on our platforms. Their effective data rates are usually 2.488Gbps downstream and 1.244Gbps upstream.
