Recent interaction between my wife and I, her on the main floor and me in the basement:
Wife: “Stop messing with the network!”
Me: {quietly} “What’s the fun in that?”
Wife: “What?”
Me: “Yes dear!”
I am about to embark on a potentially marriage-altering journey. 
I fell into my current Ubiquiti / Unifi ecosystem for a few reasons:
- I like to tinker
- It was an all-in-one solution - network, video
- Mainstream off-the-shelf options at the time were lacking for my needs
Fast forward a few years and I feel like I’m stuck, unable to move away from Ubiquiti for fear of having too many issues when migrating or not being able to find what I need with other products. Namely WiFi cameras (suggestions welcome to move away from Unifi Protect… I was looking into Amcrest or REOLINK)
Enter Alta Labs (Thank you Jordan for setting me up with an NFR Kit!).
I grabbed a Route10, S8-POE, AP6 and a AP6W - also added the rack mount kit for tidiness. We have a very segmented two-story home with both basement and attic access to run cable. The AP6W helps with single room coverage in our aging 1960’s structure. Apparently open spaces were not a thing back then. Each room is pretty closed off.
While I would like to have 10GbE, it’s not a hard requirement. If all goes well, I’m thinking of getting an S24-POE and an S12 to scratch my speed itch. I have AT&T Fiber at 5Gig, so I don’t want to waste any precious bandwidth. 
I am, by no means, a professional installer. Just someone who enjoys technology and wants to have things just work without all the complexity. Stay tuned, this project may take a weekend or may end up lasting months, but I think it will be worth it.
