POE power icon visible when POE setting OFF and non-POE device attached to port

Reporting a possible bug here. Or it might be intended design. Either way, I found it a bit mysterious.

For my NAS attached to S8 Switch ports 3 and 4 as combined ports, I get the POE Power icon shown for the port 4. It is obviously a non-POE driven device so this was not expected at first. Upon editing the port the Power-cycle pop comes up. I set the POE to Off but the POE Power icon is still there. See pictures below.

I guess there might be some sort of phantom effects or that the S8 may detect some very minimal power leakage / power draw in the Auto mode, but I would expect that identification to be shut off when POE is set to off.

My judgement is that this is only an UI issue, but there is also a, minimal, concern that the S8 may have a negative impact on the NAS.

Any ideas appreciated.

For the time being, would it be possible to move the NAS to a non-POE interface? I suspect as you do that the bug is only visual, but better safe than sorry.

I had this problem several times on my S24-PoE as well with a little HP mini PC. The PoE LED was even illuminated on the port. At one point I was told it was a firmware issue that was being looked at. Not sure on the S8.

:+1:

Yes, sounds like a fair precaution to take. I did a swap with two other non-POE devices and so far, the Synology NAS DS220+ is the only device of mine that triggers this issue.

As input to any troubleshooting on this: I also tried swapping ports on the NAS and the POE icon followed along. It appeared in port 3 instead of port 4. So, I guess that this rules out any hardware malfunction on the S8 ports, and that the electrical effect is more due to the electrical interface towards the NAS. The issue still remains that the auto detection is still active and/or a power draw and POE icon being presented in the UI even though the POE is set to Off.

Unfortunately, I didn’t double check if this was the case before changing the setup to non-POE ports. But, on the other hand, I would most certainly have noticed that.

@rutman286, I found your thread and solution

This seems to have been the case for me as well, though I am very confident that the S8 was very much up and running and I also toggled the setting back and forth a few times while discovering this. Anyway, now, the command as per

showed Enabled=1 while UI was at POE = Off (two ports) or Default (another two ports).

I toggled it back and forth and now it reports Enabled = 0, so I it is supposedly off now, though I don’t have the NAS plugged in there at the moment and can confirm the POE icon to be gone.
