Watched this the other day and thought I would share this as whilst the 2nd half of the video might not be that useful for most people here the first half is about Alta Products and then goes on to talk about Network types i.e Large / Small / IOT and what they actually do in the background etc. Jeff also talks about why they exist etc. which give you a bit of insight into the thinking behind the premise so to speak.
Anyway might not be for all but it is a good watch for newbies or less experienced.
Watched the first half and it gave a good overview of the network types. A question though. I understand how to differentiate an IOT device connected via wireless but how would you assign an IOT category to a device connected via ethernet?
I am keen on this as it solves a lot of hassle separating IOT devices from the rest of the network.
It’s a fair point and it does seem inconsistent, it fact you cannot assign any type to wired devices only option is to use VLAN…why have it on one and not the other?
@Alta-MattH - are you able to shed some light on this, is it coming or can you explain the reasoning behind this please? Any example i can think of would be IP Camera’s / wired printers etc. where you might want to put them into IOT.
This is something that would be more likely to accompany the router. Inherently, both switches and APs are L2 devices, DPI can’t really apply to them. Obviously we’ve done a tremendous amount of tweaking for the APs, but our current switch lineup is targeted to be as layer 2 as possible, they’re not intended to be layer 3, which would be a bare minimum requirement for Network Types to be applied.
