We have a single AP that is not hard wired and relies on the mesh feature. Is there a way to set an affinity so it prioritizes connecting to a close AP?
We have 2 APs inside the house and a third outdoor AP all 3 of which are hard wired. We also have a cottage/shed in the backyard with an AP6 that is connecting through mesh. I have attached a very rough non scale drawing showing the “PorchOutdoor” AP would be the ideal device for the Cottage AP to connect to. The other image is the Alta map showing that it is instead connected to the “UpstairsBlue” AP which is the farthest AP and likely the reason we are sometimes seeing poor performance in the cottage. It seems to be 50/50 when I randomly check that the AP is connected to either the UpstairsBlue or PorchOutdoor. We haven’t had any other issues but this is a bit of a nuisance. Also for added clarity in my paint drawing the basement AP looks close to the cottage, but because its below ground and has a brick patio outside (not pictured) I suspect its signal to the cottage to be the weakest.
if you hover over the name of each interferer, you will get a BSSID that you can cross referenced with the network tab, as shown in this screenshot. This will allow you to understand the signal strength of other APs on your property.
I was not aware of how to check for that info so thakn you for the quick notes!
I took a look and the results from the Cottage AP and from there the signal strengths show
Upstairs AP: -82 on the 2 GHz and -80 on the 5 GHz
Porch AP: -68 on the 2 GHz and -60 on the 5 GHz
Unless I am backwards this indicates that signal to the porch is stronger, but I checked again today it is still connecting to the Upstairs AP. I also disabled the Mesh setting last night for the Upstairs AP hoping that might take it out of the available list. I have auto channel selected on all the APs so if the mesh connection is also renewed/evaluated in that process I believe it should try again each evening.
Am I reading it backwards? It is still showing as connected to the upstairsblue AP, but I believe it shows that the outdoor AP has a stronger signal. I am attaching images that show the signal strengths for the two.
