How are APs selected

I have 2 APs in a small environment. An AP6-PRO and an AP6. Most of the wireless devices are selecting the AP6 even though it is more than twice the distance from the device and has a -86dB or lower signal strength. Why are the devices in question selecting a more remote AP?

This is a very simple set up but 2/3rds of the devices are selecting the AP6 (15 devices) over the AP6-PRO (7 devices). I have done very little changes aside from the basic configuration of the APs, roter and switch.

One example is the garage door opener. It is less than 10 ft (3 meters) from the AP6-PRO and 12 meters from the AP-6 yet it connects to the AP6 always. This is even after rebooting the AP6 and the IoT component of the garage door unit.

you can search the forum for the similar questions but basically clients dictates which AP they want to connect!

Thanks, I searched for a couple of different terms. Guess I just didn’t trust what I was reading.

You can try to coerce the clients to another AP by reducing interference and ensuring that they are connecting on the correct band. There are some additional settings at the bottom of the SSID configuration which you may try adjusting as well.
