I just replaced my infrastructure with Alta Labs, and mostly it’s smooth sailing. What I am struggling with is the fact that I am not able to use my matter/thread devices anymore with Home Assistant Yellow.
The previous setup was: OpenBSD Router, Aruba CX6000 12G, 3 x Aruba IAP-305
The current setup is: Route10, S8-POE, Control, 3 x AP6-Pro. IPv6 is enabled.
Home Assistant Yellow is directly connected to Route10. The APs are connected to S8-POE, all in the same VLAN. Firewall filtering is default.
Is there anything that I am missing to make this work?
I had previously used a Firewalla which worked fabulously in terms of my Matter/Thread setup. Worked across VLANS and everything.
I run Home Assistant as a container on a Proxmox server which interfaces to my Thread Border Router (Apple TV). When I switched over from Firewalla to Route 10, I tried to mirror all my settings to avoid any major downtime and headache. I had enabled all the mDNS and IPv6 settings across the networks but still couldn’t get the Matter/Thread working. Long story short, for my case it was due to VLANS.
My wired network was running on VLAN 1 (default), wifi on VLAN 2, IoT on VLAN (3), plus Guest VLAN (4). My Apple TV was on wifi VLAN 2, HA was on VLAN 1 and all my IoT devices are on the IoT VLAN (3).
I didn’t have any isolation or special rules setup at the time (isolation being the main one, except for guest) so theoretically with mDNS it should have worked - I would have thought.
At least for my specific use case after hours of troubleshooting was to simply move my Home Assistant and Apple TV to the IoT VLAN (so everything is on the same VLAN) and it started working.
My previous Firewalla didn’t require this and I tried to mirror my settings from that to the Route 10 but in the end had to put everything on the same VLAN to get it to work.
Maybe there is a better way to do it or maybe it’s a glitch in the mDNS or inter-VLAN IPv6 routing but to get you working give that a try. If you’re all on a single VLAN already, maybe it has to do with the IP addresses need reset in the HA device? I’m not familiar with the HA Yellow, but if it’s anything like the HA Container there are network settings - maybe you made them static instead of DHCP so it’s holding onto the old settings? Also maybe you need to reset the network settings on the HA Yellow.
