First-time Setup Enhancements

Migrated this over to the Feature Request section.

Possible enhancements for first-time setups not being performed via BT. These ideas are being presented at the basic level for all users to understand and chime in on. The objective is to collectively aid Alta with ideas and opinions to further enhance the new user experience.

  1. Ability to view an actively connected Alta “Control” device, along with other Alta devices on the splash page during the first-time setup of the Route10. This concept could be presented in a reserved area on the page during the initial setup. This would give users the option right then and there to either be directed to the local controller for initial setup or pivot and go the cloud-based route. The local configuration option can be as simple as allowing the user to hover over the IP (text) of the Control, which would function as an active hyperlink, such as the example below, or integrate into the initial setup process.

Route10 - Alta Discovery

WAN
Active Interface: WAN 1
Model: Vendor C (Based off OUI/MAC Address prefix)
MAC Address: XXXXXXXXXXXX
IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

LAN
Active Interface: LAN 1
Model: Control
MAC Address: AP6PROXXXXXXXXXXXX
IP Address: 192.168.1.12
Firmware: 0.0z (Click to upgrade)

Active Interface: LAN 2
Model: AP6-PRO
MAC Address: CONTROLXXXXXXXXXXXX
IP Address: 192.168.1.13
Firmware: 0.0z (Click to upgrade)

Active Interface: LAN4
Model: S24-POE
MAC Address: S24POEXXXXXXXXXXXX
IP Address: 192.168.1.15
Firmware: 0.0z (Click to upgrade)

Non-Alta Devices
Active Interface: LAN 3
Model: Vendor B (Based off OUI/MAC Address prefix)
MAC Address: XXXXXXXXXXXX
IP Address: 192.168.1.14

  1. Ability for the user to upgrade discovered Alta devices as seen above, which would ensure a seamless setup without running the risk of firmware incompatibilities.

Added 2/5/2025 -

  1. Ability to inform the user if the active WAN port is receiving an IP that resides within a private class (A,B,C) with an option to substitute the default assigned C class network with one or the other. This could potentially help out some of your most basic customers who have not properly configured IP-Passthrough on their ISP gateway devices as an example. No, this does not solve their real issue at hand, but it at least gets them past the initial set up.

I encourage all to chime in and add any enhancements they too would like to see.

The one I’d most like to see - for first time setup - would be to allow setting the initial lan subnet before connecting to a local controller. Seems like this should be easy to add and would greatly simplify migrating an existing setup to Alta Labs.
It would also be nice to have an easy migration path from cloud based to locally hosted controller. It’s a bit more straightforward to do initial setup cloud based, but it’s an unpleasant surprise to find out that doesn’t help you setting things up locally.
