Enhanced Connect-Info Metrics

Just spotted this announcement today: WayFi Wireless, Alta Labs, and Single Digits Advance WBA’s Access Network Metrics Initiative with Enhanced Connect-Info Metrics for Carrier Offload - Wireless Broadband Alliance

Sounds interesting! Curious if anyone from the Alta team could elaborate on this a bit more. Are these additional metrics mostly useful for carriers as part of the Carrier Offload? Or is there a way some of this information could be seen and utilized in the controller as well?

Thanks!

The specification can be found at draft-grayson-connectinfo-04 - A syntax for the RADIUS Connect-Info attribute used in Wi-Fi networks

This has been requested by carriers for years to arm them with more WiFi-related data. Up until now, this data has been obtained through proprietary, disparate methods and protocols. They can take this standard data to make better decisions on which connections to offload to WiFi. Alta Labs is the first and only one (so far) to implement!

Forgot to mention, to enable it, just add “rad_stats=1” to your hostapd power-user block. This will automatically be added if you are using AltaBoost or WayFi for carrier offload.

OK, thanks! I’ll peruse that draft a bit more to see what kind of info gets sent along.

Is that info already being sent if AltaBoost is configured? Or would the rad_stats line need to be added to a previously setup SSID?

It is not currently sent with AltaBoost, but will be soon. It’s telemetry data - SNR, data-rates being used, latency.

Cool! I would say it would be neat to see latency info in the controller as well. But I imagine that this standard couldn’t be repurposed for that since it looks like it relies on the SSID utilzing RADIUS to deliver that information
