Assign a device to a specific AP

Hi Guys,

I understand there is no easy way to assign a device to a specific AP other than setting up a dedicated SSID for each zone ( 1st floor, 2nd floor etc ) or playing with the air time efficiency ( which can affects other devices ) and the same applies to pretty much all brands.

Could we imagine as a feature request, that a device ( once it has been discovered ) could be assigned to a specific AP by having its mac address banned from unwanted AP ( this list would be dynamically updated in the background ) ? This could give to Alta Labs a serious advantage over the competition.

Reason why I’m asking is because many devices with poor WIFI implantation ( home automation , security devices, irrigation system, HVAC units ,printers etc ) don’t always pick up the closest AP , especially when all AP from a site restart after an update or a power failure , causing devices to reconnect to the first AP that has restarted.

Thank you for taking the time to read

Seems like its been discussed before, so I guess more users may consider this a useful feature.

Making a hidden SSID under a new color is the best solution for this problem.

Is that the long term solution as well? I mean, will there be an explicit functionality to assign a device to a specific AP, as per the feature request of this thread, or have you ruled it out altogether?

Definitely would like to see this as well.

Some of your competors have this feature. Instead of creating a hidden SSID, why not consider creating the ability to lock a client to a specific BSSID?

I need it as well. Ubiquiti does it. So we used them in a house where there were half a dozen WAPs and a bunch of ecobee thermostats that support (ecobee) had us lock them to the best WAPs so they quit roaming to bad ones and then get all goofy with connections. Deploying Barco ClickShare too, they say to lock them to prevent them from roaming as they don’t perform well when roaming. We’re not usually talking about one device and one AP, so we don’t want to be adding more and more SSIDs creating more noise. The lack of this capability essentially cancels out the less interference benefit of your cool multiple VLANs per single SSID (AltaPass).
