AP 6 Disconnecting or failing to connect

Hi there, I have fitted a so8 Poe switch and 2 AP 6. Once they have been booted up and adopted they say disconnected. I was starting to pull my hair out after trying resets etc. Then they suddenly came alive and worked for about 10mins before disconnecting again. I am connecting to a sky router so was wondering if that could be causing the issue. Or is there something in settings I could be missing .
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had to do some searching to determine what Sky Router was, looks like maybe an ISP in the UK?

Assuming that’s accurate, they appear to be DSL/Cable so generally speaking, it should provide enough bandwidth and low enough latency to maintain a solid connection to the cloud (i.e. it’s not satellite which is prone to latency). Given that they are successfully connecting and then dropping back off, it could be packet loss that is the culprit. Have you run any ping tests out to the internet?

As a side note, the devices don’t have to maintain a connection to the cloud to function. Maintaining a connection is preferred as that will be used for statistical reporting, firmware updates, initial configuration and configuration changes, etc. But they can function without connection to the cloud.

Hi thanks for the response. Yes they are an ISP ! Please bear with my ignorance as this is all pretty new to me.
When they disconnect the network disappears and I have nothing to connect to. I am just a bit confused with you saying they should work even when disconnected ?

No worries at all, I’ve yet to meet a sentient being who knows everything. There’s a quote from an ancient philosopher that escapes me at the moment.

It’s a bit of dealer’s choice:

  • If you’re only using WiFi for internet access, you can have the APs stop broadcasting when the internet is unreachable and start broadcasting when it’s reachable again. This is done automatically. It can somewhat be an indicator of lost of internet connection in a way. “Oh, I’m not connected to WiFi, but I should be, the internet must be down”.
  • If you’re using WiFi for other things like streaming media from a home server, file sharing to a local NAS, backups over the network to a NAS, etc. then you would want the WiFi operational even if internet connection is lost

Every AP has this feature and it’s enabled by default. It’s called “Always On”. To find it, click on the icon of an AP, and go to Settings. There, it will be a toggle for “Always On”
