Are there any plans to make Route10 something more than just a 5-tuple rule based firewall?
The Route10 looks like a great initial product and upon first glance it does match the “basic firewall” things that Ubiquiti provides on their platform. Personally though I would much like it if Route10 offered another approach to route and traffic management on the network, using device policy based rules.
Firewalla is what I use at home and implements this “device centric” approach to network access policies and routing. As soon as a new mac address or device is seen on the network I can easily and quickly tag this device to route traffic over one of my VPN egress points; or I can block all internet egress with just one tap. The device traffic history is also kept overtime and tracked.
Second this. While I was waiting for a router from Alta, I was installing Firewallas on all of my installs.
Really set the bar for me as far as being very powerful, WHILE ALSO being extremely easy to use. I could spend half an hour training homeowners how to use the app, explain that it’s going to be “noisy” for a while as it (and they) learn what normal traffic on the network looks like, then they’re good to go. One of the best home / small business firewalls out there in my opinion.
I hope Alta move closer to that level of visibility and control over time.
You can already block access completely by tapping the pause/block button on the list of devices, and you can disable/enable the global filter list (over WiFi) on a per-device basis. We do plan to improve granularity, as well, with filter groups, etc. in the near future.
My customers are enterprise entities, and as such, they use only ZBF and expect the same for any new solution. Unfortunately I resorted to Uniquiti ZBF which they like. Since ZBF is not ready Alta would not be a right fit.
