Alta Labs Route 10 Dual WAN Setup Questions

Hello. I have a question concerning the dual wan feature of the route 10. I realize that this is probably a noob question, but any help that can be provided is appreciated.

Here is my situation:
I work from home so I need my internet to always be up and running. Due to this,. I have 2 ISPs. I’m currently using Quantun Fiber as my main connection and Xfinity as my backup.

I have Quantum’s C6500XK smartNID and xfinity’s XB7

Quantum is connected to an unmanaged switch that provides wired connections to multiple devices including a couple of NASs. It also provides my main wifi network. The Xfinity isn’t connected to anything and just broadcasts a wifi network I can connect to if needed.

What I would like to do, and the reason that I got the route 10, is connect both Quantum and Xfinity to the route 10 and connect that to my unmanaged switch and configure/keep Quantum as the main connection and Xfinity as the failover.

I understand that the smartNID and the XB7 will need to be in bridge mode and that on the route 10 I will need to set the metrics for the wan ports accordingly to specify the primary and the backup.

What I’m not sure of is if the smartNID can/will passthrough its IP range of 192.168.0.x or if I will need to use the 192.168.1 range from the route 10, or if I’ll need manually specify the route 10 to use the 192.168.0 range and whether or not that will create any issues with my current configuration (my NASs run several services including dynamic DNS and a proxy manager. I would like to keep the 192.168.0 range to avoid having to reconfigure those, but if I can’t it’s not a huge issue).

Also, for the failover, is there anything else I need to do besides putting the XB7 in bridge mode and setting the metric for the wan port it’s connected to on the route 10 to a value higher than the metric for the wan port the quantum connection will be on (Example: Quantum metric would be 1 and Xfinity metric would be 2).

Also, port forwarding. I’ve played around with it a little trying to get the port forwarding for my plex server to work and it just won’t. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Any help with port forwarding is also appreciated.

I should mention that I am aware of the VLAN tagging 201 that Quantum uses. I’ve read that you can leave that alone on the smartNID or remove it and set the VLAN tagging to 201 on the route 10. However, some people have reported that when having the route 10 handle the VLAN tagging for Quantum that it causes inconsistent connections and frequent disconnects.

If the info I am looking for is already detailed somewhere, please point me in that direction.

Thank you

Okay, so the biggest problem you have going on currently is the fact that your trying to utilize the C6500XK in a non-bridged mode. You’ve got a double NAT situation, and you may need to do the same with your comcast XB7.

Let the C6500XK handle the VLAN situation, just turn on transparent bridging and get a public IP address on your Route10 from both providers. After that your port forwarding will probably work a bit better

I’ve got a similar setup with Frontier Fiber with Comcast as a backup, Fiber has the lower metric and it works as expected.
