Out of curiosity, I’d love to hear what kind of home environments you folks on the Alta crew are working with!
What kind of Alta gear are you running at home—how many APs, switches, routers, or other fun stuff? And roughly how many clients do you have connected, both wired and wireless? Always fun to hear how others have things set up, especially from people who really know the tech inside and out!
Server Room:
Route10 with symmetric 2gbps fiber internet
10gbps link to a Zyxel multi-gig switch (until our aggregation switch is ready)
10gbps link to another brand 48 port PoE+ switch (until our 48 port switch is ready)
This is my core switch
Couple APs powered off of this and a bunch of PoE cameras
Many servers and services running out of there
From there, 10gbps link in to my office, which feeds an aggregation switch. In my office is my desktop and Alta lab.
All in Alta:
Production
4 AP6-Pros for production WiFi across a 2,000 square foot house. Overkill, but I want 5GHz everywhere on my property.
S24-PoE
S8-PoE
Route10
My home network currently is Route10, S24-POE, 2x AP6-Pro, and 1x AP6-Pro-Outdoor. I may add a AP6W into the mix for a bit. I have 3Gbps symmetrical FttH going to a XGS-PON module (WAS-110 equivalent), and a cable WAN that is 1Gbps/30Mbps asymmetrical as a backup. Currently 1 server and 1 NVR on the rack. Likely going to replace the server this year. There is a NAS as well.
Not an overly high device count, ~50 client devices, 15 wired and 35 wireless. Apple Home running on Apple TVs with some various IoT/multicast devices, various IP speakers, a few automations that I have running, with varying triggers.
Lab/test configs vary depending on what I’m doing. I’ve got a fair amount of devices to work with, it really just depends on what I’m actually testing.
