A list of suggestions and thoughts

Hi team, I know you are working hard to bring the best product to market and I have a few suggestions and thoughts I would like to share. Hopefully you will find some suggestions valuable.

Web (manage.alta.com)

  • Dashboard: more statistics (how many clients are on which band, how many clients are connected per AP etc). Might be in the works and released when the router is available. Guess many datapoints can be added when the router is added to the environment.
  • Dashboard: show number of clients connected historically alongside the Network Activity (like add a barchart into the current mix)
  • Dashboard: why, 2D, 2M? I would like to see what has been going on today (since midnight), this week and this month.
  • Dashboard: Overall health. How are the clients doing? Signal trend etc…clients that often have issues
  • Network: See the uptime as a column
  • Network / Selected device, temperature seems to go back to Fahrenheit every time. Make it stick to Celsius if I choose that.
  • Devices: See connected since and last seen as a column
  • Add a Topology page to help visualise the network equipment and clients

App:

  • App hangs after a while and one has to restart the app to get it to work again. Usually within a couple of minutes if opening another app in between.
  • There seems to be a ”drag down and release” to update function but only on the Network and Settings tabs, not on the Dashboard or Devices tab
  • Dashboard: More statistics as just mentioned above for the web
  • Dashboard: No indications on how many clients are connected
  • All tabs: On the graphs change the purple color ”Show Peak” to white so it’s readable. You can’t read it right now.
  • Network and Devices tab: Make a compact view as well. If you have hundreds of devices or clients it will be bloated. Name and one or two datapoints on a narrow row and when clicking to expand it can show the graph. Use the same font size for the name and ip-address to make to more clean
  • Network / Selected device, temperature seems to go back to Fahrenheit every time. Make it stick to Celsius if I choose that.
  • Notification possibility when a new client that has not been seen before connects.
  • Notifications when an update is available

Some additional thoughts:

  • Make it possible to schedule the lights on the AP, for example I love the blue line but it lights up in the night and if in the bedroom one might want to go dark after 10 p.m. or so…
  • Flash or change color if update is available
  • Personal preference - Network should be named Devices (Network is to vague)
  • Personal preference - Devices should be named Clients (Its clients that connect to the devices like APs, Switches)
  • Daily, weekly and monthly summary/health (APs & Switch uptime, performance and load, clients connected ”low, average, high”, throughput, upload/download)
  • Add a configuration option so one can choose to display the unit of upload/download speed Mbit/s for example. Its hard to track and get a good understanding when not only the number gets updated but also between b/s, kb/s and mb/s… The font size is also changed based on the length…Personally I would like to prefer Mb/s as the default option and the same font size.

Right now the focus seems to be the activity/traffic-graph on each device/client and I believe that summary of the overall health of the devices and clients should also be part of the Dashboard.

I know that @Alta-Chase already talked about the versions and functionalities of controllers ( local vs hardware vs cloud).

Since you paid for the local version, I think it could help people buy the local license or the hardware version to have more features than the cloud. Maybe some parsing locally that couldn’t be done remotely (cloud) for security reasons. I like the local controller (hardware) but for 150$ I would like to have a couple of features about data transfer per client, uptime, signal strength, and a couple of other features mentioned higher in this post.

But don’t get me wrong, I really like the Control and a review is coming soon, but I think that may be a deal breaker for some customers.

@L3houx Perhaps I am missing something, but information like data transfer per client, signal strength, DPI data, and more is already available in the Devices tab. If you hover over the client’s graph, you can get all of this information, including which applications that specific client is using. If you select 1 Hr or 2 Days, you can see how much traffic has been transferred per client during that specific time period. We are continuously improving where/how this data is displayed, but from what I know, much of this is already there, just displayed in a different format than perhaps others’ display it.

The 2D and 2M stem from 60 different time periods. Real time: 60 seconds, 1H: 60 minutes, 2D: 60 hours (so more like 2.5 days), and 2M: 60 days. Each time period is automatically rolled over and aggregated at the specific time based on the time zone the device is in.

I also want to add, we are definitely working on the ability to see the whole network topology, and clients connected to specific APs, etc. and several other items in your initial post. So stay tuned!

Devices per SSID would be really nice. Mobile view seems to be deprecated compared to the web view, which is understandable I suppose. I am not sure if it is possible to “flag” a device to do like an ongoing capture of what’s going on, that would be pretty cool.

I suppose when the router comes out, a lot more information will be filled in for each client device, as opposed to just MAC addresses. I have a lot of “no name” devices on the network, and I don’t pay attention enough to label them or care. lol
