QOS changes download speed dramatically

I have some video buffering on my network so I set dl/ul speeds on the wan. The download speed dropped from 2000Mbps to 1300Mbps. If I remove the speeds, it goes back to normal. Acceleration is disabled - enabling makes it worse.

Is QOS broken or is there something I’m missing?

I believe that’s to be expected as QoS on the WAN uses CAKE Active Queue Management. It automatically priotizes traffic flows but bypasses all the hardware acceleration that allows the Route10 to hit those higher speeds.

You’re welcome! I guess my next question then would be what the end goal is? I saw video buffering was mentioned, but is that buffering in a video chat? Or more something like YouTube?

No, the problem is mainly noticed on TV streaming. I have IGMP snooping on the vlan with the TV’s, however I have a device (AirTV Anywhere) that buffers quite a bit and I am getting heat about it. Trying to solve the issue. The device is connected by ethernet to a port on an S8 POE which is connected directly to the Route 10. I thought just setting quality of service would fix it - but I guess not.

Setting the switch ports use the Enterprise QoS profile would probably be the next easiest thing to try. It’ll probably be most helpful if the AirTV is adding DSCP tags to it’s traffic, since those will then be priortized by the switch in turn.

Thanks! I don’t have much experience with QOS, but I set the port to Enterprise with 7 priority. We’ll see what that does for the buffering.

One more thing - I have an AP6 on another port of the S8 POE. Is it possible to set Enterprise on that as well? I would think it would need a different priority. It may be the AP6 that is buffering since the end users are accessing the TV streaming from WIFI. The ATV is connected to the switch by Ethernet.

You’re welcome! Yeah, there shouldn’t be a problem setting all the switch ports to the use Enterprise QoS profile. I think they’re a pretty sane priority mapping for any traffic flowing through that has a priority tagged on it.
